"When You Want Her Back..."

Chapter Three.

Bret let out a breath before he knocked on Rosa's door.

"Come in," he heard her call out before he entered. Rosa had the blue room, a cozy, regular room. Bret never liked the whole theme for every room, but Jackie had insisted it was how the house be designed. So, he agreed. Bret walked in to see Rosa on the bed reading a book.

Rosa looked up and smiled, "Hey Bret, what brings you here in the wee hours of the day?"

Bret laughed,"You mean two in the afternoon?" He laughed again and Rosa joined.

"Well, Hana was sleeping and I was just thinking," Bret paused as the look of Uh-oh hit Rosa's face.

"I was thinking that we need to make her feel more welcomed.Gina told me she was freshly taken away from her mother. She said she might have a hard time, and I'm just trying to make it easier. I love this girl, and I want her to feel at home."

"Bret, she's already calling you daddy"

"Yes, true, but Rosa, she can call me Daddy. What do I do when she ask about a mommy, like she just did?" Bret looked away from Rosa, but knew she read his mind.

Shaking her head Rosa put her book down and got up from the bed. "When she asks who her mother is now. You tell her the truth. She doesn't have one, but you make sure she knows that she won't need one. You are all that girl will ever need. Your love IS enough. She doesn't need a mother."

"Rosa every child needs a mother."

"She will get one in time. That is if you get over Jackie, and move on! Jackie was your fiance, and I understand you might still have feelings for her. Truthfully, I think you know deep down in your heart you didn't love her. She was a gold digger, Bret. Don't let her get your child, your money, and your future. Because, that Bret, is the one thing you do control."

"Okay, okay, Rosa, I get it. So, I should get back in the dating game?"

"Yes, most definately."

Bret nodded his head at Rosa and simply said, "Ok then, dating here I come." Bret realized that once again Rosa was right. Walking out of her room, he made a mental note to give her a day off. Really a man couldn't ask for a better maid or friend. Bret decided that dating wouldn't be easy, and his first thought would be to start off small and easy. Bret chose the internet. Entering his room and heading for his desk, he summed up the woman he wanted.

Bret logged into a local dating site. He entered what he was looking for and read the list out loud:

"1. Must be intelligent-(need to have a decent convo)
2. Slim average body.-(I want hold you)
3.Hair long and silky.-(So I can run my finger through your hair, and you don't end up bald.)
4.Needs to like kids-(A MUST)
5.Healthy eating habits and keeps clean-(no nasty stuff)"
Bret nodded his head, to him it sounded like a decent and simple wish list for a woman. Surely, there was at least one someone who would fit that description. AT LEAST ONE.
********************************

"So, have you found Hana yet?" Lena asked her sister sitting on the couch, flipping through a magazine, and taking a bite of an apple. April did not believe how calm her sister was. Her daughter was taken away and she was looking at a magazine? April did not approve, but didn't want to get Lena angry once again. So, she simply gave it a shame-on-you stamp and moved on.

"Oh wow, well how am i supposed to do all that?" Lena asked.

"No Lena, I called the services. They say that you couldn't possibly get her back until you have a job, an apartment, are healthy, have an extra room for Hana, AND if she has already been adopted, then fought for in the court of law."

Lena looked surprised. April could have guessed that her sister thought it would be easy to get her daughter back. Sure enough, April knew Lena would try to pin all the work on her. NOT THIS TIME. Their whole entire life, Lena had always taken the easy way and April had lugged her weight around with hard work and determination. Of course, in most cases the eldest was like that.

April just simply rolled her eyes and said, "There's this thing normal people do. It's called work! GET UP! You want your daughter you get up and look for a job. I AM NOT going to help you take this child away from a happy home when you are clearly not ready to have her back. Truthfully, I don't think the law will either."
Lena seemed offended at April's words, but none the less turned around and ate more of her apple. Maybe she was just hungry or maybe she was holding back words she knew wouldn't get her any help, but April knew either way by eating her apple she had just avioded a large conflict. All April thought was SMART MOVE.

Turning away from her sister and back to the screen with the file of her book, April began to check her email. The trip to Reno was great and truly helpful in the series she was planning, but the Lena was holding her back. With her sister around, her head was clogged. With the thought of Hana nothing could get in. Or out. Hana was her niece and she had longed to have one. Being an aunt meant a lot to her and she couldn't help but hate her sister for keeping this family from her.She would have been there for her and come to her resue when Luther died.

When she needed some one to hold her together. But, of course, as usual Lena never wanted April there for anything but help in things she couldn't handle.
April's thoughts were interrupted with the sound of "You've got mail". April looked at the first letter and realized it was from the dating service she had joined a month ago. April had joined it in the hopes of finding a man who could help to create a better character for her story, but no man had appealed to her. Since then, she had just forgotten about the membership all together. April's eyes widened at the sight of the hunk whose female criteria she had met. Quickly, she skimmed through his profile. "SIX FEET! Brown hair, hazel green eyes, SINGLE PARENT?" she said out loud. Sighing, she read through the rest. This man seemed perfect and she was really interested, but how could she handle him being a single parent? She loved kids, but wasn't ready to date a single parent. Just as April was about to close out and move onto the next email, she read where it said "I ADOPTED MY CHILD" in bold proud letters. This factor changed everything.

This made Bret McAllister sweet and giving. This made him PERFECT. Clicking on send message, April began her letter to the sweet man who she hoped had a future with her.

"When You Want Her Back..."

Chapter two.

The next morning, April demanded her sister start at the begining. She knew nothing of her daugter or her apparently dead husband. It all was a surprise to her. Lena as a child always said she would never settle or have children. Her sister was quite the bachelorette. Now, she had a daughter and had been married. "So start with your husband, I want to know about him."

Lena nodded her head and took a sip of her coffee. "Luther. That was his name, he was a captain in the Marines. He used to go away a lot, but we were in love. So, we got married to keep together even when he was away. You know me, April, I wouldn't get married. So anyway, we met at a bar. He had just got back and I was bummed. He cheered me up when I needed it. He was my strength, April, and he died. Out on the boat, it sank because apparently it hit a major rock. Man, I loved him. Hana was two at the time."

April sat and listened to her sister ramble, and tell her story jumping from one thing to the next. As if the story, like her life, had no order.

"Three Years with Luther, best years of my life."

"So tell me, Lena, what happened after he died?" April watched her sister gaze out into a world April would never understand or be welcomed into. Lena's thoughts. She did everything different in all the wrong ways. Her sister always chose the hard way as opposed to the fast, smart way of getting things done.

"I fell apart, seven months after he died was all drinking, smoking, and all nothingness. Two months ago, I over did it. A neighbor found Hana crying next to me, I was passed out. So, they took her and put me in rehab. I have been doing good on the drinking and smoking, so I think they will give Hana back. Dont you?"

April sighed,"Lena there is a lot to this. They will use your actions against you, and court will be necessary. It will be hard and who knows, Lena, she could have another family already."

"I want MY daughter"

****************************************

"Hana! Come down for breakfast!" Bret yelled up the steps. He stood and waited until the little girl appeared with her doll in her hand and the stairwell banister in the other. Her golden hair was disheveled and her pajamas wrinkled. She had slept in her bed for the first time and every twenty minutes it seemed she showed up in Bret's room. Each time Brett put her back in her bed, kissed her good night, and promised her everything would be fine. Yet she still came back, until finally Brett just let the child sleep with him. It wasn't until then she seemed at ease and actually enjoying her sleep.

Finally, the girl reached the bottom of the stairs and Bret welcomed her with a hug. He held her hand and walked her to the kitchen. Rosa standing in front of a pot on the stove turned around and said, "Morning! Hiya, Hana, how was your night?"

Hana stared at Rosa and finally answered, "Ok.."

Rosa shared a worried glance with Bret. Bret nodded his head to assure Rosa to continue and talk to the girl more. Rosa was very important to Bret and the girl would be seeing alot of her. Bret and Rosa were raised together, and when Rosa was kicked out of her home because her gambling boyfriend had not payed the bills. She came to Bret. He offered her his home, but she refused to live there without giving something in return. Rosa his bestfriend, his maid.

"Ready for some blueberry pancakes, Hana?"

Hana glanced up and smiled, it seemed Rosa hit her happy button. "PANCAKES! Yay!" Hana began to dance with her doll and they all laughed. Soon enough, Bret joined the dancing and Rosa did too. Dancing together they sang

"Paaaaaaaaaaancakes paaaaaaaaancakes! yay!"

Finally, Bret sat down and said, "Ok ok you two come on. All this dancing made me extra hungry. Sit, lets eat"

Hana and Rosa stopped dancing, and Hana took a seet at the table. While Rosa worked on the pancakes, Hana played with her dolls hair. She curled it, and looked at it with fascination. Bret began to read his newspaper, when Hana tapped on his hand.

"Mr.Bret person, Gina told me you're my father, but then what do I call you?Don't babies call their daddies Daddy?"

The young ones question surprised Bret. He didn't think that she would ask such a question or even have the mind to come up with it. Obviously, little Hana was smarter than Bret had thought. "Yes, Hana, I am your father. Babies do call there fathers Daddy, but for now its up to you. You call me what you want."

"Oh, I wanna' call you Daddy. I never called Luther daddy..he not with us." The girl just shrugged and played with her doll's hair some more.

Bret stood there surprised as to how this child spoke and thought. She was so young and knew so much. Deciding to set a happy scene he said, "Oh, blueberry pancakes! Lets eat!"

"When You Want Her Back..."

Chapter one.

Bret McAllister was completely blown away when his beautiful new daughter walked through the door holding the social workers hand. She had beautiful golden locks of hair that curled, her brown eyes glistened in the sun that appeared as she entered the room. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. The girl he noticed held a doll in her hand and hugged it tighter the closer she got to him. "Well McAllister, here's your daughter. The papers are signed and taken care of, all you need to do is watch after this young girl. Now she loves her doll, likes to be sung to sleep, and if theres ever any problems sing to her. Got it?" Bret nodded his head and knelt down to speak to his new daughter for the first time. "Hi honey. I'm your father," words he loved coming out of his mouth.

Bret picked up the small child and her bags as he walked out of the building wearing a large smile. Being this girl's parent was all he wanted. He had missed his first chance, but he wouldn't miss this chance. Buckling her into the car seat, he kissed her forhead. In response, the girl smiled back then turned her attention to her doll. Bret walked around his simple 2004 Ford Explorer, and entered the drivers seat. He turned on the car and rolled the windows down slightly. "So Hana what songs do you like to sing?" The girl remained silent and Bret asked again "Come on tell me, what songs do you like to sing?"

Finally the girl looked up from her doll and said, "Old McDonald"

"Oh yes, that's a classic. You know when i was little, my uncle had a farm. I would go to his farm and sing about the animals I'd see. How about we do that now?" Bret looked in the rearview mirror yet again and saw the girl smile. Her smile was so sweet and innocent.

"YEAH YEAH! I wanna' do dat'" she said.

Together they sang 'Old McDonald' beginning with the dog Hana saw the lady walking to the cow in the 'Got Milk?' advertisement.

Before long, Bret was pulling his car into his drive way. He parked in the garage and got out of the car moving to the side to take Hana out.He opened the car door to see that the small girl had fallen asleep and was in her toddler car seat hugging her doll. Bret carefully picked her up and closed the car door. He went inside his home and greeted the maid. "Afternoon, Rosa."

The twenty eight year old maid turned around and nearly screamed at the sight of the child. Luckily for Bret she didn't. "Oh wow, shes beautiful. Bret, I am so proud of you! You're a father."

Smiling Bret continued his way upstairs. He turned to the room door marked 'Hana'. He had it especially made for her along with everything else in the room. The room had been painted a light green with pictures of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. The room had a comfy bed for her, and a toy chest full of dolls and toys he thought she would like. The whole month he had prepared for Hana.

Walking close to the bed and kneeling down, he layed the child in her bed. He removed her jaket and shoes. The girl rolled over and seemed comfortable where she was. Standing above the bed, Bret felt so achieved and proud. He had the most beautiful little girl as a daughter. Finally, he turned away from his daughter and left the room sure to leave the door a little open to be able to hear her.

Bret walked down the steps quietly and moved toward the kitchen where he knew Rosa would be cooking. He walked into the kitchen and watched the young maid reach for a box of macaroni. "You need some help?"

Turning around, Rosa nodded her head."So tell me," she said to him watching him move to the cabinets."How is it? You know your daughter and the adoption. I just can't imagine it."

Bret turned around and handed the box to Rosa,"It's kind of a feeling you can't explain. I mean, I look at that child and I can't help but love her, even before I know her. Because, I know she's mine now. Truthfully, I don't know who would give up their child like that. Hana is so beautiful, and I would do anything if I was her mother to keep her and love her." he said crossing his arms. As he talked, he gazed at the floor as though he was some where else. "It's hard to think. I'm a dad. I'm going to be taking care of this child. I'm going to give her what her parents didn't."

Rosa smiled, "I believe you. I can see it in your eyes, you care about her. You're going to do great. Now dinner will be ready in an hour and a half. Since Hana is sleeping, why dont u shower?"

Bret nodded his head and said, "yeah I think I'll do that. It's a good idea."
--------

April sighed as she entered her flat. The apartment was pitch black and seemed so empty. Putting her keys down on the side table by the door, April flicked on the lights. She hadn't been home in a month and it felt so great to finally be here. The placed smelled just as it did when she left, but looked a bit more dust-covered. Not caring about neatness, she set her bags down by the front door and walked further into her apartment. She went into the kitchen and pulled a glass out of the cabnits. She poured some water, and gulped it down. Water from her home was the best. Putting the glass in the sink and walking to her room, she flicked off the lights. Entering her room, she removed her high heels and socks. Let her hair loose, and pulled the sheets back on the bed. April slid into bed and rolled over only to scream at the feel of another person in her bed.

"Ah! Get away! You can have anything you want, I think I have my purse right on the side table in the hallway!" she jumped out of the bed.

She was walking out of her room, when a soft, kind familiar voice said "April.. I need you"

Turning around quickly, April saw her sister. The firey red heads' hair was all worn out. The bags under her eyes couldn't be stronger, and she definitely looked underweight. What had happened to the healthy, happy Lena she knew when she was younger? Walking to her sister in the bed, she hugged her. Together they sat there holding each other as Lena did what seemed to be crying.

"Lena whats wrong?"

"They took her, my Hana, they took her."

April stood there in total shock and confusion. Hana? "What are you talking about Lena?" For moments Lena didn't speak until once again April asked, "Tell me what is going on."

"Hana, my daughter of three years, they took her away from me."

April was completely blown away. She had no idea she even had a niece to begin with and already she'd lost it. To what? April hadn't talked to her sister in five years, but she didn't really consider it a problem. She had things to do, people to see. Why would it matter? "Who took Hana?"

"Child services. They said my smoking habit is no good for her. I want her back, these past two months have been so painful."

Once again needing explanation, April said, "Two months! And you're just coming to me?"

"Well the first month, was just me in rehab for drug abuse. The second month, you were in Reno doing your research or what ever it is you do.."

"You mean my paying job? Oh yes, it's called being a writer, and I was researching the area for a new series based there. Unlike you, I like to back up my facts and actually make sense."

"You know what, April, I don't need this! I don't know why I ever came here." At those words, Lena began to get up and attempted to leave.

Until April grabbed her sister and said, "No, Lena, obviously you do need this. Would you come here if you didn't need it? Just stay, sleep, shower, and eat. Then we'll talk about it in the morning. Don't worry she will be fine. Hana, right?"

"Yes, Hana my little Goldy-locks, you know she looks just like her father."

"Which would be?"

"My deceased husband." Saying that, Lena raised her left hand to show her wedding ring. April was overwhelmed. It seemed her "little" sister was having a family while she sat here writing, and doing college. What was wrong with that?
