"When You Want Her Back..."

Chapter Four.

Bret grunted as he picked up three year old Hana. It was nine O'clock and she was dressed for bed. In the afternoon when she had awoken Bret Rosa and Hana spent the whole time baking cookies. After ward the clean up was hard. Lying in bed with the child in her small mini bed Bret opened the book. "What are we reading?" Hana asked eager and happy.

"It's Cinderella. Ever heard that story?"

The girl nodded her head and said "Yes mommy read it to me... I mean OLD mommy... She read it to me. She told me I was lucky I didn’t have an evil stepmother like the lady in the story... Am I lucky?" Bret was once again startled. At the same time he felt confused. What had the old mother of this child told her?

"Of course Hana you are lucky. But not only about the evil step mother... or just this story. About everything. About the clothes you wear, the food you eat and a lot of times the people you meet and come to love."

The little girl’s eyebrows went down in what seemed to be confusion.” Why about the food I eat and the clothes I wear?"

Nodding his head Bret debated the right answer. He wanted everything to come out clear and wanted her to understand how lucky she was. How lucky he was. "Well... Because you could also not have them. You know kids out there who don’t have anything at all. So you should give thanks and feel lucky for having all this."

Hana puckered her lips and kissed Bret on the cheek. "I'm thankful " was all she said before signaling for Bret to read the story. Bret began reading the old and famous story to the little girl. together they pointed at pictures and matched parts in the story with the pictures. Hana seemed to love reading a story with Bret but before the climax of the story came little Hana was fast asleep. Bret put the book aside and for a minute watched his daughter sleep. moving aside one of her golden strands of hair he kissed her forehead and sneaked out of her bed. Leaving a little light coming in through the door he left for his room.

Entering his room Bret went straight for the computer. Inside he was really eager to find out which woman had found him interesting. Sitting at his desk he logged into the “&HEARTS” dating service. To his surprise ten women had reacted to him and messaged him. Quickly he began reading the letters. Bret had lost hope when he had reached the 7th letter and found the entire previous woman beautiful but certainly weren’t interesting.

All of a sudden a picture of a blonde haired woman caught Bret's interest. Clicking on the message he began to read it ardent to find out more about this woman:

Hey Hunk!

HaHa Actually I'm just kidding. Well I'm Also April. April Sanders a writer and single. I'm 5'6" in heels and 5'4" without them. But lets just say I'm 5'6" (makes me feel better =]) so anyway. I'm a natural blonde with natural highlights of gold. I weigh 130 and am proud considering the fact that I’m a writer so all I do is sit and write in most scenarios. I'm a Yankee fan through thick and thin even though I was born in Boston which isn’t very Yankee welcoming... Right now I'm living in your state which is New Jersey. Ok well now that I have rambled on about myself I think it’s your turn. Hopefully talk to you soon.

*~x~April~x~*

Bret smiled at the letter. This woman was sassy and funny but best of all true. She had said everything about herself and made it clear she was proud of who she was. Bret loved that she was a Yankee fan even though she admitted to being born in Boston. This woman was great. With out a doubt he would message her back. He WAS interested.

******************************************************

Early morning April and her sister were out on the streets scanning for jobs. Looking through the news paper April highlighted all the jobs she thought her sister could handle. Smiling she found the perfect job. "Hey how about being a maid?" She asked her sister as she settled in the table with their orders.

Her sister put a fry in her mouth and said “Uh maid? I don’t think I’m clean enough for it.. or even good enough at cleaning for it."

"Well I really think you should try it. Sounds like a good job. Here read it... Good pay... Good hours" April said handing the paper to her sister. Today had started out great. She'd written the first chapter of her new series and gotten over the blockage her sister had caused. She’d checked her email and responded to the new hunk Bret &HEARTS dating service had found for her. She’d taken a great shower and now was eating what she had desired to eat for the past week.

"Ok ill try it... But only as a temp job" her sister said.

An hour later April was dropping her sister off at her new job for a training session. "Be careful. I’ll talk to you later on tonight." April said driving away after ward.

Signaling her blinker April turned the corner and headed to the office of Jay Colmes. April decided that she should better further investigate what had happened and what she needed to do to make more happen. That morning, after answering Brett's letter, she called Jay and asked him to bring up anything on her sisters case. He'd briefed her of what could possibly happen next and simply promised he'd try his best.

Jay was very important to April and she always was sure to ask his opinion. She always made him read the contract she was about to sign and practically let him choose the publishers she worked with. Basically Jay was her only way to trust her own decisions.

Pulling into the parking lot near Jay's office April paid the man and jumped out of the car. Zipping up her jean jacket she fixed her purse strap and trotted out of the lot. It was spring and there was a slight breeze. April wore Capri’s and a black dressy short sleeved shirt. Her sneakers were black Nikes and her glasses were cute silver ones that were her favorite. Walking to the corner April entered the small business building. Sitting in the front desk was Jays sweet secretary "Why hello April" she said "Jay is expecting you just sit for a moment while I go tell him your here." April nodded her head and turned toward the waiting area created for the clients Jay didn’t have.

Jay was a great lawyer but really had no clients except for a couple family issues here and there. Truthfully April felt sorry for jay but knew there was nothing she could do. She didn’t know anyone who would need a lawyer or could afford it. Other writer’s preferred well known well paid lawyers so jay was not for them. Jay was sweet and cared about every one he worked with. He thought of things and solutions no one else would and had the brain to out smart any judge. The only thing that stopped Jay from being huge was this small town he worked in. April had told jay he should leave New Jersey but he refused. New Jersey was his home. He would never turn his back on it for fame and fortune.

"April he said to go right in." Rita said pointing to his office.

"Thank you Rita. By the way that lip stick color goes very well with you. Who are we trying to impress huh?" Laughing April left the blushing woman and entered Jay's office with a totally new personality.

"Give it to me Jay" she said with the most seriousness she could conjure.

Jay pulled out a file with out a smile. "April there’s some things that didn’t match your sister’s story." Surprised April signaled for Jay to keep talking.

"Luther didn’t die. He was dismissed for fighting with another man. Only he never was heard from after that. I don’t no if she’s just lying to you or if she chooses to lie to every one including her. Secondly that happened two years ago. If Lena told you it was when Hana was two then she lied. Third this isn’t the first time the house was visited by social services. About seven months ago Lena got drunk and left little Hana out on the porch. They warned her and told the neighbors to look out for her. "

April was shocked. She was trying her best for her sister to get her daughter back and to help her and she had lied to her. Taking the folder from Jay April decided to move on. "Ok well... what now? Lena wants Hana back... I want Hana back what do we do?" Jay sighed a frustrated sigh and April knew it wasn’t a good sign.

"Well April. Hana has been adopted. They won’t say to who she’s been adopted but they did tell me that she was. Which means getting her back could possibly take months. Lena needs to get a job. You need to talk to social services yourself and request that u fight in the court of law for Hana. It’s a lot and you and Lena need to be sure your ready for it. Does Lena have a job yet?" Jay said.

"Well she’s at a training session for one right now... so that’s a maybe." at those words April's phone rang and she answered it

"What??"

"Well hi to you to" Lena said. April rolled her eyes and said what once again. "April come pick me up this job isn’t going to work.”

"Why not Lena what’s wrong with it?"

"DID YOU KNOW I HAVE TO CLEAN BATHROOMS?!" swearing April told her sister she would be there in five minutes and hung up the phone.

"Ok well so then its no. Lena doesn’t have a job. Could u just sum up what we have to do to prove she’s ready for Hana?"

Jay nodded his head and said “An apartment. A job. A good job that would pay enough for the two. A baby sister for when she’s working. Oh and you need to battle her new parents." April sighed and said ok.

"Well thanks Jay. I have to go get Lena but I’ll definitely be back ok.” April turned toward the door and walked out.
