"October's Horror"
Chapter Three
“He said… Bring a friend.” October told Myracle as they sat in her kitchen on the table. Kristian’s invitation to a barbeque had startled her but what left her stumped most of all was his gesture to bring a friend. October had no idea if he meant to bring a date or honestly just bring a friend. Because of this very fact she called onto her sister.
Myracle was an exact replica of October only Myracle had long dyed her hair blonde and her eye color was a natural grey blue. In many ways people considered October the dark strong responsible twin and Myracle the blonde. In her heart October knew that Myracle wasn’t honestly a blonde. She had brains. Only her outer core sometimes got to her and made her think just as she appeared to think.
“This is quite a dilemma. Well, is Kristian cute?” Myracle asked hand out like she was demanding the information.
“Nope, he’s definitely not cute… He’s damn hot! Try muscled cop, gorgeous blue eyes, brown hair, five foot seven inches and all covered a nicely tanned complexion. That man is hot like fire!” October said staring out into space then catching herself in thoughts of Kristian.
“Then I don’t understand the problem. WHY WOULD YOU BRING A DATE? Who invited you? A hot guy, am I right? Then why would you bring a date? Maybe he just meant to ACTUALLY bring a friend. And in that case… BRING ME!” Myracle said smile wide.
October debated the idea and quickly weighed the pros and cons of it all. Finally she made her decision. “Ok, your coming but only if you help me pick out something to wear”
“Done deal! Can I bring a date?” Myracle asked emphasizing the I in her question.
“If you can find one by Saturday…” October said then shook her head and added “but of course you could. You have a million guy’s right?”
“No… just one. “Miracle said following it by her exit out of the kitchen and probably to the bathroom.
Sighing October picked up the glasses they had used to drink some orange juice and placed them in the sink. She knew for sure Miracle would find a date in no time because that was just how Miracle was. Many guys became goggle eyed over Miracle and Miracle just seemed to love it and use it to her advantage. October wasn’t jealous of Miracle that was for sure because honestly if she was she could very well just look exactly like her it was just things like finding a date so quickly that she wishes she had the power of.
Many times guys didn’t find October as attractive as Myracle. October knew it had nothing to do with facial features or body type because Myracle and October were pretty much clones of each other. October knew that the main problem she had with guys was her career and attitude.
October wasn’t really into guys at this time. She just wanted to focus on her job and paying the bills. October enjoyed being independent and owning a large home to herself. She loved getting into her car and driving away knowing everything was under control. Myracle wasn’t anything close to this.
Not to long ago Myracle and October’s grandfather finally passed away at the age of 97. Myracle and October being the only grandchildren who still visited him were lucky enough to be included in his will. In his will he gave them his all. Everything that he had made and stored away in the bank, that over time collected interest, and also stocks he invested in. This is turn leading to a great fortune. The money was split fifty-fifty. October had her money locked way in the bank collecting interest while Myracle lived the life of having fun.
This gave Myracle the image of looking fun. She partied most weekends and even weekdays. She shopped and flirted with guys. She sat around in a coffee shop looking nice for no reason at all. Giving her the laid back look every guy wants in a girl.
October on the other hand happened to be the complete opposite. October never spent time in a coffee shop longer then what she needed to pick up her coffee and she only went shopping at dressy places. She constantly wore slacks with heals and button down shirts. Her hair was always tied up or brushed back but never loose. She had to admit that this look could appear rather stuck up and preppy to people but it was the look that fit her.
October could never imagine herself wearing jeans and tank top. It wasn’t her. She had seen herself in jeans and tank top. It pretty much looked like “Wow… I wonder what you are thinking about!”
October shook her head “Oh nothing… Hey, don’t you think it’s getting a little chilly to be wearing just tank top and jeans? It’s the second day of October!” she said watching her sister shrug her shoulders.
“I carry a sweater. Besides, don’t you think it’s cute?” Myracle said twirling around and then modeling it as she walked around the kitchen table.
“Sure, sure, What ever suits you I guess? Anyway, I have only one client today and it’s in about an hour. So could you check my mail while I go change?” October asked holding out her keys.
“Sure, no biggie. I’m really good at doing stuff like that!”
“Awesome.” October replied before walking away and heading to her bedroom.
It was now 3 40 and she had a session with Gabi at 5. It was it was Wednesday so she was in school till three. That gave Gabi about two hours to get to the office. Most times though she never made it to the office and claimed it all to be school and transportation. Yet, October guessed that there was no getting out of today because Kristian would be bringing her and picking her up.
October was secretly looking forward to seeing Kristian. He seemed to completely have her interest. As she thought about it she realized that there was no woman on this earth single who didn’t find Kristian interesting. October wasn’t normally fooled by men and there good looks but Kristian seemed different then just another good looking goon.
He was hypnotizing and magnetic. Shaking her head violently October forced thoughts of Kristian out of her mind. This was going too far. Never had she pondered about a man for so long with out finding a flaw. Scratching her head she quickly walked to her room. She shed of all her clothes fast and jumped into her shower.
Her shower would normally be a place for her where thought process began but because her mind was revolving around Kristian she thought it better to just rush her shower. Quickly washing up she turned off the water and jumped into a bath robe. Rushing into her room he quickly began to dress.
She threw on once again slacks and a button down shirt. Her button down shirt was turquoise which matched her slightly high heeled shoes. She tied her hair into a simple pony tail just as she had done everyday and returned a pair of earrings back on her ears. Quickly she applied mascara and blush to her pale and simplistic face. She preferred not to wear lip stick but every two hours or so she always applied lip gloss. Throwing on some perfume and grabbing her jacket and purse she headed out of her room feeling that she had dressed at a rather satisfying time.
Walking into the kitchen she smiled at her sister and her sister nodded. Needing no words to understand they both knew that this was there way of Myracle approving what October was wearing. As she set her bag onto the table and threw her jacket on a chair she glanced around for the mail. Myracle still eating cookies pointed to counter at the very end of the kitchen. October nodded and headed straight for the mail.
Picking through the mail she threw the bills to the side and the offers away until finally she reaches the bottom of the pile where an envelope and box sat. Unsure of what it could be she headed for the envelope. Opening it quickly with curiosity eating her away she ripped the envelope and pulled out the neatly folded letter.
Written in red ink the letter began.
"October, so nice to be writing to you. How are you? Sorry to say that this isn’t a social call… or rather letter. I’m here to tell you that I know what you are going to do. You know too much. You were told of secret things that should not have been said and for that. I’m going to kindly silence you. I can not afford for you to mess this up for me October. I just can not. You’re my target now October. Watch your back.”
As she finished reading the words horror filled her lungs and she found her self struggling to breath. Sure enough she knew that just to make things feel worse the person who wrote this very letter added a heart with a smiley face in it. Who could have possibly written this?
The more she thought about it the more she realized that there was a vast amount of people in her life who had told her secrets. So of course many people were possible suspects. Never had she thought that these secrets would turn into such a scary letter.
Completely rattled she felt unsafe in her kitchen. Looking at the windows she suddenly felt revealed and that everything and anyone had access to inside the house. Sure enough she wanted out of this place. The person who wrote this knew her home address. Of course that narrowed it down a bit but then again any one had access to the yellow book. Mind racing to a million possibilities she finally threw the letter on the counter and grabbed her jacket.
“Let’s get out of here Myracle. It’s
“Sure.”
Together they trotted out the apartment and out of the building. Both jumped into their own car and drove together toward McDonalds. Reaching there they both got out and walked into the fast food restaurant.
“Ok, I know what I am getting.” October told Myracle. “I want a regular cheese burger and two apple pies.”
“Wow, don’t you think that’s rather fattening?” Myracle asked hand on her hip and the other in the air.
“Says the girl who ate all my cookies upstairs?”
“Your right… We are both pitiful.” Myracle said frown now on her face. A second past as Myracle stood staring at the floor and taping on her chin. “I’ve got it!” she said.
“Uh oh… What? What have you got?” October asked.
“Don’t sound so skeptical I haven’t even told you my idea yet. How about we both go on a diet?” Myracle said smile on her face.
“What? No. I am perfectly fine with my weight. I look good in a dress which is all I want.” October said pushing past her sister and joining the line.
“PLEASE October Please!” Myracle said yelling loud enough to have the whole restaurant’s attention.
“FINE” October said turning away from her sister and stomping out of the restaurant. “I’ll go on a starvation diet maybe that’ll work!” she said knowing her sister was right behind her.
“Well... no bu -“Myracle began but was cut off by her sister.
“I honestly have to go. I’ll talk to you some other time.” October said getting into her car and driving away.
So now she had been threatened by some unknown person and her sister made her get on a diet. What else could be thrown her way?
**********************************************
Kristian walked with October throw the hall and toward October’s office. Kristian had picked up Gabi and drove her to the office fifteen minutes early and decided that it wasn’t enough to just drive her but he should also escort her. Although he had to admit his major intention was seeing October. He longed to see what dressy out fit she had chosen today.
When Kristian and Gabi entered the office Kristian picked up on October’s sent and although he did not see her right away he new she was there. Suddenly October popped up from behind the desk.
Seeming a bit startled she smiled at them. “Sorry,” she said “I was just getting my pen from the floor. “
“No Problem” Kristian said smiling in return. A silent moment passed until finally Kristian cleared his throat and said “Well, I’ll be back in an hour.” Quickly he turned to exit the office.
“Actually Kristian. I need to talk with you for a minute if you don’t mind… In private.” October said glancing at Gabi.
“Oh yeah don’t mind me. I’ll leave. It’s not like this is actually MY session.” Gabi said rolling her eyes and throwing her hands in the air.
“One second. Before you go, how are you?” October asked.
“I’m fine. Really I am. I’m sorry I turned on you like that. My cat has been missing so I’m a little on edge.” Gabi said nodding her head then turning to walk out the office. “If you need me I’ll be in the waiting area. Try to hurry this convo up ok?”
With those words Gabi was gone. Nervous once more he shoved his hands into his pocket. He was unsure what made him so nervous when he was alone with October but he was sure he found it rather annoying.
“Why don’t you take a seat? You make me nervous by standing.” She said giving him a side smile.
Chills ran down his spine as he thought about her words and embraced the smile she gave him. She had no idea the effect she had on him and she couldn’t begin to think of what nervous meant for him. Taking a seat just as she had requested he sat in the client seat.
“Ok, so Kristian I kind of have this problem. I received a threatening letter today. By mail I’m assuming and it’s pretty scary.” She said nodding her head.
“Well, where is it?” he asked her. Threatening letters was not what he thought this talk would be about. Threatening letters is what he prayed this wouldn’t be about.
“It’s actually in my apartment. I forgot to grab it in my rush. After reading the letter I just really needed to get out of my house if you understand”
“Completely” he said. “What are you doing after Gabi?”
Scratching her head she said “Nothing that I know of I only had her today.”
“Well, then how about I follow you home and you give me the letter. Maybe forensics could take a look at it. I’ll pull some favors. Threatening letters isn’t really something we as police put high priority. It just well might be a prank.” He said trying to comfort her.
“Yes, I thought of that too. Well, I just don’t know any more. I’m turning to you for help because you’re the only cop I know personally.”
“Understood” he said. October smiled and he knew that he would do his best to help her.
