"Myracles Happen"
Chapter Three
The door swung open and Troy’s heart sank. Her face said the words “pain” all over it. Her lip was swollen and her eye was bruised. Her right eye looked puffed as if she had been crying for hours. He guessed she had been. Myracle looked at the two standing on her porch and smiled. October sighed and opened her arms to embrace her sister in a hug. Myracle hugged her sister back and looked up at Troy. Her eyes seemed pleading with him, asking for help. They were a sorrowful shade of blue and her hair was beyond untamed. It hurt him to see her like this.
His first instinct was to rip out this mans intestines when October told him what happened. Of course he knew he couldn’t do anything to the man but he did know he could help Myracle. That was his main interest at this moment. The hug broke off and everybody went inside. Myracle sat on her couch and October and Troy followed.
“How are you?” October asked. In her voice you could tell she wasn’t asking how she was physically but how she felt emotionally.
Myracle looked up with her blue eyes at her sister and simply said, “Better.” October nodded her head and glanced at Troy for a split second. “Kristian helped October. He really did help me a lot. He’s a great guy. Marry him. He’s amazing.”
October sent her sister a slight smile, “I might. Speaking of him, where is he?”
“He went to do some paper work and then he’s going after Brian.” Her voice faded away when his name slipped out of her mouth and she looked down. Suddenly Troy hated the name Brian. Suddenly the name sickened him to the bottom of his stomach, and suddenly some one else’s stomach made some noise.
October looked at Troy and he shook his head. They both looked at Myracle and she looked up at them and laid a hand on her stomach.
“I can go get something to eat” October said. “How about pizza?” she offered.
Myracle nodded her head and with those words October was out of the house. Troy was stunned. “What was that about?” Myracle asked.
“I have no idea.” He said still looking at the door that October previously stormed out of.
“She’s never left that quickly in her life. Amazing… So what are you doing here?” She asked touching her lip.
It was only then that it occurred to him that maybe Myracle didn’t want him there. It hadn’t came to him before that maybe she didn’t want him seeing her like this. That she wanted to keep this between family members. If she did feel that way it hurt Troy to think that she didn’t consider him close. It wasn’t his fault. It was his parents. He hated them.
“Oh, would you like me to go?” He asked.
Myracle’s eyes widened “no!” she exclaimed. “Stay, I’m glad you’re here I just didn’t expect it.”
“I was with October when she got the call from the cop. So I tagged along.”
Troy couldn’t help but look at her bruises. They looked horrible. Troy got up and moved to the other couch sitting next to Myracle. Looking at her he reached out to touch her lip. His finger lightly touching her lip he felt the swollen part. Suddenly a tear came rushing down her cheek making contact with Troy’s hand. He wiped its trail away yet more came.
“Why couldn’t I have found a good guy?” Myracle asked.
“I think that it’s not that you don’t find good guys... but you just don’t find guys good enough for you.” Troy wiped away more tears.

“I can’t go back there Kristian!” October yelled pacing in front of the pizzeria and yelling into the phone.
“Why not?” He asked.
October thought of it. She couldn’t go back there because she’d never seen her sister in this much pain. It was scary to think a man did that to her sister. In her opinion that’s what men did to you. They hurt you till you look something close to Myracle. Either you hurt on the inside... or you hurt on the outside.
This made her wonder if possibly this was why she didn’t want to marry Kristian. He was a great guy but she’d known him for all of three months and even though she’d enjoyed every moment of them, she still was unsure about the man inside. People sometimes weren’t who you thought they were and Myracle was an example of this. She’d known Brian for as long as she’d known Kristian. Maybe she knew Kristian a bit more then she knew Brian but all in all she thought he was an ok guy. If you’d have asked her she would have never guessed he could lash out on Myracle after drinking too much.
“October?” Kristian’s voice called out to her on the other line.
“Actually, I’ll be fine. How’s it going with the paper work and getting Brian arrested?” October said.
October stopped pacing and looked out at the surroundings around her. The streets were covered in salt to melt away the snow and every breath she took she saw. People walked around shopping bags in their hands no doubt from Christmas shopping. Children seemed to stop at every car that still had untouched snow on it in fascination and pure need to pick it up. On a normal day, with out the snow, the streets would be crowded with people preparing for Christmas. Only, because the snow had freshly fallen this morning you can say most people stayed inside.
A couple walking by holding hands laughed and caught October’s attention. They seemed happy. The woman smiled up at the man and he looked into her eyes. In his eyes you saw the compassion. October thought back to times she thought she saw that same look in Kristian’s eyes. She wondered if it were real. Her breathing sped up as she stared at the couple. She wanted that! Then she thought of Myracle. She feared that.
“Kristian” she interrupted him.
“yeah?” he asked.
“I want to marry you.” October said. There was a pause.
“Really?” he asked.
“I want to marry you but…” Kristian sighed on the other line. October herself sighed. Why was it every time she took a step forward with Kristian she always took a step back? “I’m scared.”
“Scared?” Kristian said sounding stunned. “Scared of what? Commitment?”
“No, scared of being hurt. I don’t know if I can trust you. I mean… I KNOW I can trust you I’m just worried maybe I shouldn’t or can’t. God I’m not even making sense!” she yelled throwing a hand in the air.
“I’m not going to hurt you October” Kristian said calmly.
“I’m pretty sure if you asked Brian that a week ago he’d have said the same thing about Myracle.” She was now comparing the two? What was she doing?
“I’m not Brian, October.”
“I know… but it could happen! We’ve only known each other for THREE months. It’s too soon for marriage. I mean what do I know about you?”
“Only everything I’ve told you, which is everything you need to know. October… Do you love me?” Kristian asked.
October looked down and bit down on her lip. “yes.” She said. She meant it… or at least she thought so. Who was she to say she loved him? She didn’t know true love. Her parents weren’t true love but care. Her parents cared for each other but they both knew they didn’t LOVE each other. “I love you.” She said. Her heart said it also.
“That’s all I need to know. I’m wiling to wait. I love you October and I wont loose you because you’re not ready for marriage or you don’t think you know me well enough to trust me.”
Hearing what she had said to him coming out of his mouth she realized what she was saying was unreasonable. He was an amazing guy. Tell him you want to marry him! Don’t take it back this time! Don’t be afraid! She yelled at herself. “Kristian ask me to marry you again… Please”
“will you marry me?”
“yes.” She smiled.
******************************************
Myracle tapped the wheel with her thumb. She stared at the apartment building that she had yet to see any one come out of. “Troy…” she said “Why are we here?” Brian lived in this building. She knew that she had driven and she knew that she had stated why she was here before but she needed to hear it again.
“Because you had a sudden urge to see him and tell him how you felt. I’m here so that if he says anything smart or looks at you in a way I do not like I may break his nose.” Myracle looked at Troy and some how she knew he wasn’t kidding. She grimaced at the thought of Troy really breaking his nose and turned back to the building.
Did she really want to go in there? She thought back to the words exchanged with Troy and the confidence boost he gave her and some how she didn’t see where this fit in. What was it that led her to drive them both to his apartment building?
Sighing she thought that it didn’t matter what brought her to the building because talking to Brian was the right thing to do. She sighed and pulled the Keys out of the ignition. She opened her door stepped out and began walking to the building. Behind her she heard the crunch in Troy’s steps.
She was happy he was there. He was in a way her protection and support. So far she liked him period. It amazed her that even after her boyfriend beat her she still found herself interested in another man. Maybe she just believed in true love THAT much. Maybe she just refused to give up on men. Maybe it was just the fact that Troy was so drop dead gorgeous.
His body was built and you sensed his strength even by looking at him. His jaw line was above masculine and his height was just right. Myracle adored the man he became. It was hard for her to imagine that this was the fifteen year old she once jumped into a lake with. Thinking about it she hadn’t done anything like that in years. Where was it she changed in life? So far it didn’t seem like the change was for the better. Not wanting to get into the depression of her meaningless life she Reached into her pocket and pulled out the key.
She put it in the door just before she looked at her reflection in the rear view mirror. Her mascara was smudged over her eyes. Under the black was a bruise and her lip was still swollen. She hated the way she looked. She was dressed in slacks and a sweater that was layered with multiple shirts under it. She looked horrible and it was all a reflection of what he did to her.
Opening the door she stepped into the lobby and Troy followed. He stood standing behind her his hand on her neck for support. She walked to the elevator and waited for the doors to open. The doors opened and surprised was she. Brian was now standing in front of her. When he saw her he looked shocked. He looked at her then looked at Troy and pressed the close doors button. Myracle didn’t react she only watched the doors close.
Shrugging her shoulders she moved to the doorway to the stairs. She trotted up the stairs and exited on the forth floor. Just then she heard the elevator doors open. She didn’t move because Brian was like her prey and she knew that if he was to see her he’d run and hide in the elevator. She waited till she heard him open the door and close it till she rounded the corner. She stepped in front of the door and used the key to open the door.
She stepped through the door ways and turned around. She pressed her hand to Troy’s chest and he raised his eye brows. She nodded her head and he shrugged. She kept walking and sure enough Troy stood at the door way.
“Brian!” she called out stepping further into the living room that the hall way leads into. Brian was kneeling behind the couch trying to hide. Myracle moved to the couch and poked the one body part he couldn’t hide, his back. He looked up at her from the fetal position and waved.
Myracle stepped away from the couch and Brian rose. She looked at him and noted his fear. He had broken out in a sweat and his hands were trembling. She looked at him and she knew that she should hate him. She looked at him and she knew she didn’t. Some how feelings still existed there for him. Did that matter to her? No, it didn’t matter. She needed to tell him now and here that it was over. That he was to be gone. She needed him to know that what he did to her would come with consequences… And after he hit her.. There was no undoing what he had done.
“Brian…” she said calmly. “I’m not here to have you get beat up. We just seriously need to talk.”
