"Myracles Happen"

Chapter Four

Troy held Myracle’s hand between his including and icepack. Her hand was fragile in his and he didn’t want to let it go or move the ice. Glancing up and away from their hands he realized Myracle was looking at him. He blinked a bit then finally said “what?”

Myracle smiled, “Nothing, just thinking about how much this was worth it.”

Troy laughed a bit and said “I still think you should have let me done the nose breaking as I planned to. Look at your hand. It’s in pain, the poor thing.”

“Did you see how fast he went down?” Myracle said.

“Boy, do I never want to make you angry at me. You seem so satisfied to see him in pain.” Troy said to her.

Together they sat in a diner, in stools. It was around dinner time and Myracle and Troy were waiting on their orders. At the apartment Myracle began to talk to Brian and some how she had seen something in his eyes she didn’t enjoy and in the end she swung and punched him straight in the nose. His nose cracked and bled while her knuckles endured their own pain. Myracle did some more “YOU BASTARD” yelling and stomped out but not before grabbing a lamp and saying it was hers and he would never get it back again.

Women fascinated him. Why did she have to grab the ugly lamp? Looking down he examined it again. The lamp stood there by their stools tall and yellow. It’s design was of a badly drawn mermaid whose tail had been chipped away and long ago lost its glitter. This meant that it’s tail was also glitter residue covered.

“I had to take something.” Myracle said looking down at the lamp with the same look he had.

“I say we go back return this and take his plasma T.V.” Troy said. Troy gave her a wide smile and got a laugh out of her.

“No, but I’ll remember it. I just hate him so bad. He just did something so unexplainable. My anger to him is so strong. I won’t rest till he gets his.” She said.

“We could always do more to him. Like graffiti his door or… egg his car?” Troy suggested.

“Oh boy, flash backs.” Myracle giggled and Troy remember the egging fun they’d had together. “Man, I haven’t done something like this in years. I feel amazing.”

“That’s a good sign. Maybe that means you’re closer to being Myracle again.”

“Maybe not… I some how deadly want to hit the salon. Then shop… I don’t get myself sometimes.” There was a pause and both remained quiet. Myracle looked at him and her tone changed.

“You can’t change in day Myracle.” Troy said to her. They exchanged a quiet moment and within those moments he looked into the depth of her blue eyes. Their shade now seemed closer to grey. She had changed much over the years and even her eyes bared age and signs that she was now all grown up. Myracle nodded her head and just then on que their food arrived bagged and ready to go.

Troy and Myracle got up and walked to the door troy holding the bags and car keys in his hand while Myracle held her own hand and the ice pack in her hand. They exited the diner and walked the short distance to her car. Myracle agreed to let Troy drive while she catered to her hand. Troy got into the drivers side and Myracle jumped into the passenger’s seat. Troy pulled out of their parking spot and drove. Within minutes they were in front of Myracle’s home.

They quickly both got out of the car and headed to the porch. Once on the porch Troy grabbed a note that had been left on Myracle’s door. The note read short and simply “October was here” under that was a little scribbled picture of a telephone. Troy handed the note to Myracle with a smile and opened her door. He stepped into the dark home and turned on the lights. Everything seemed untouched but he looked around anyway.

It was after dark and Troy never underestimated the chances of things happening at night. As he looked around Myracle pushed past him and said “Don’t be paranoid” she moved down the hall and into the kitchen. Troy closed the door and followed her. When he got to the kitchen she was unpacking the food. She put the cartons on a tray and grabbed some plastic forks and spoons.

She handed him the tray and he walked to the living room. Using her left hand for everything she poured them some drinks. She grabbed one and joined him in the living room. She returned and grabbed the other one seeming frustrated with her current stasus of disability.

“So,” he said “what do you want to do? We could watch a movie on T.V.” he suggested.

Myracle smiled at him and said “You want to know a secret hobby of mine?” Troy nodded his head and Myracle pulled him off the couch. She pulled him to the stairs and up the stairs. Once up the stairs she led him to a door. “Open the door” she said.

Troy cautiously opened the door unsure of what to expect from Myracle. He flicked on the lights and was astonished to find that the walls all had loads of DVDs on them. He stood staring at them in amazement. Myracle pushed past him yet again with a smile on her face.

“I’ve been collecting for two years now. I go on the internet and buy them wholesale or extremely cheap. I think it’s one of the smart things I do with my money. Now we can watch what ever movie I have here and from the looks of it. You’re bound to like one of these movies. I mean how many are they’re here? A good eight hundred” She tooka look around the room.

To Troy it looked like she had a never ending amount. Where would he start! Troy walked to one wall that was labeled new releases and looked through the movies. Many movies he’d never even heard of. He’d missed so much in the past 15 years. Of course he did catch a flick here or there but it wasn’t something that he paid much attention to. Troy turned to Myracle and hugged her. No apparent reason ran through his head for the hug he was just surprised and happy. While hugging her he felt her stiff posture relax as she sighed and snuggled into him. It was then he realized that she had a long day and probably needed a hug long ago.

“Troy,” Myracle said after pulling away.

“Hum?” he said to her his attention not really on her but shifting through the movies.

“Can you stay over tonight?” this caught Troy’s attention and he turned to her with a smile.

“I’m not that kind of guy Myracle.” He said still smiling.

“Shut up, you know that’s not what I meant!” she said seeming stunned.

“Of course I’ll stay. I call dibs on the couch.” He said turning back to the movies yet still smiling. Staying over with Myracle. That was something.

Myracle lie in bed under her blanket and the phone in her ear. The phone rang and then finally October answered. “Hello” Myracle whispered into the phone.

“Hello?” October replied.

“It’s me. Myracle.” Myracle said keeping her whispering tone.

October sighed into the phone and there was some ruffles. “Ok, I’m awake. Why are you whispering?”

“Troy is here, downstairs sleeping.” Myracle said moving around under her blanket.

“Wow, maybe I’m not awake did you say Troy is at your house? Sounds to me like there’s something happening between you two.” October said no doubt Myracle knew she was smiling.

“No, there is nothing happening between us. I just feel safe when he is around.” Myracle whispered.

“If you feel so safe when he is around then why are you calling me?” Myracle pulled the phone away from her ear and looked at it angry. Shut up! She said to the phone no sound coming out of her mouth.

Myracle returned the phone to her ear and listened to the sound of her sister opening and closing kitchen drawers. “Listen you left me a note on my door with a telephone. Here I am calling you.” Suddenly Myracle heard a creek in the hall way and froze. She poked her head from under the blanket and looked around her room. It seemed Troy being around only made her more paranoid.

She returned herself under the blanket shielded from the room around her and waited her sister’s response. “About that…” October paused made some kind of sipping sound then continued. “Where’d you go? And how are you feeling?”

“I went with Troy to Brian’s apartment. Don’t worry we didn’t kill him. I just wanted to talk to him. He didn’t react the way I wanted so I punched him but I swear that was all.” Myracle said her voice still at whisper tone.

“You sure that was all?” October asked.

“Okay, so I took the dammed mermaid lamp to but that’s all. That’s where it ends.” Myracle said making hand gestures under the bed moving her blanket around.

“Didn’t his ex-girlfriend give him that lamp?” October asked.

“That is completely beside the point; it was just conveniently near the door.” Myracle said.

“Right…” October and Myracle shared a pause and then October continued. “And how are you feeling?”

“I’m ok. My hand hurts and my lip. I have this horrible stomach pain but I’m surviving.” She said to her sister.

“You should really make an appointment with your doctor. Just to make sure he didn’t really hurt anything important.” Myracle didn’t say anything. “Besides you! You’re important you know that. I meant anything so important its life threatening.”

“Right… well, I don’t know about a doctor October. I really don’t want any one else to know about this. I only want to stay in my home till the bruises are less noticeable. With the exception of a trip to the salon, of course.” Myracle said grabbing a strand of her blonde hair.

“Of course.” October said in a sort of mocking way. “Listen I need sleep but if anything call me ok. I love you and I hate that he had the audacity to lay his hands on you. You know if I were a judge I’d demand that his gentiles be cut off.”

Myracle smiled at her sister’s comment. “I know October. I love you too.” Myracle hung up the phone and put it beside her pillow. She was still covered by her blanket and all around her was dark. In a way she was beginning to like it like this. Dark and alone. It seemed safer because you couldn’t see bad things in the dark and if you were alone there would be no one around to witness her pain.

Thinking of the word pain she paid more attention tot h cramps she was now having. Testing the pain she rolled over and the pain lessened. Closing her eyes she let herself drift away.

**********************************

Troy was up with in seconds at the sound of a woman’s scream. He looked around although his vision was still blurry and moved for the steps. He quickly ran up the steps as his vision began clearing. He worked his way around the first floor looking for the source of the scream. Finally he got to the bathroom where his vision was crystal clear and he saw that Myracle was covered in blood below her waist. Stunned he looked around and found no one around. “What the happened?!” he asked.

Myracle looked at him with a look of bewilderedness and her eyes rolled back and she fainted. Shocked he moved quickly to her and caught her before she hit the floor. Troy wore his boxers and nothing else so he had no phone on him. He picked Myracle up and moved for her room. Her bed suffered from more blood exposure but as if planned for him the phone was on her pillow. He grabbed the phone and dialed nine-one-one. He told them the address and ran down stairs. He threw his pants on and his shoes then ran back up stairs.

Figuring that the paramedics would end up ripping her clothes he left Myracle in the clothes she slept in. Looking through her closets he found a duffle bag. He grabbed jeans and a shirt. He moved to her drawers and grabbed some underwear. Closing the full duffle bag he threw it on his arm and moved back to Myracle who was still unconscious. He picked her up and moved down the steps. He opened the door and the early morning light hit his face. Just then the sirens kicked in and he saw the van coming.

He looked down at Myracle’s face and kissed her forehead. He hoped everything would be ok. Even more he wanted to know what happened.
